Terms of Use

The Educational Outreach Program is available for Teachers and Educators of public, private, and home schools, and other civic education programs such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The activities can be adapted for use with students of all ages, and are specifically designed for Grades 3-8. The program is designed by the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory (Waring Laboratory) at the University of West Georgia and runs in cooperation with the West Georgia Youth Science & Technology Center. Although it is recommended to check-out Teaching Trunks, it is not necessary as some of the activities can be reproduced using common objects found in the classroom. The whole Teacher's Guide packet, including activities, is available to Educators free on-line after completing the Reservation and Activity Request. When is the Program Available?

Each of the Traveling Teaching Trunks must be picked up and returned to the West Georgia Youth Science & Technology Center Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-4:30PM.  The Traveling Teaching Trunk cannot be shipped at this time. A member of the Waring Laboratory will review the activities of interest with the Educator and answer any questions.  Each trunk is checked out for a two-week period and may be renewed, depending on availability.

The Guided Tour may be given in conjunction with the On-site Mock Excavation or stand-alone. If the Tour is given by itself, it must taken Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-4:30PM.

The On-site Mock Excavation is scheduled during the weekday, depending on staff availability.

How to Participate in the Education Program

Each component of the Educational Outreach Program must be reserved at least three weeks in advance and is available on a first-requested, first-served basis.  The Educator must complete a Reservation Form and identify the approximate desired schedule. This Reservation Form includes all Program activities - Traveling Teaching Trunks, Guided Tour, and On-Site Mock Excavation Pit. Note: The Traveling Teaching Trunks may be checked out for up to two weeks. The Form must be returned to the West Georgia Youth Science & Technology Center and then a date and time will be arranged with the Waring Laboratory. 

Cost

The Educator is responsible for photocopying any papers necessary for the activities chosen for the Educational Outreach Program. The Traveling Teaching Trunks are available to Teachers and Educators of public, private, and home schools for up to a two-week period, for a $50.00 returnable deposit. The deposit fee is waived for schools who are members of the GYSTC. A fee of $10.00 a day will be initiated for late returns.  The borrower accepts full financial responsibility for all loan materials while they are checked-out in their name.  The Waring Laboratory determines all damage and replacement costs.  The On-Site Mock Excavation cost is $5.00 per digger.  The Guided Tour is free.

Cancellations

Educators must contact the Waring Laboratory at least two weeks before the scheduled pick up of the Traveling Teaching Trunk or reservation of the On-site Mock Excavation. The activities are scheduled so that other schools may use them and the Waring Laboratory needs to know immediately to inform others of any delay(s).
