"Educational Excellence in a Personal Environment"

Gill Fountain

The "College in the Country" program began in 1949, when members of the Smithfield community asked WGC chaplain J. Carson Pritchard to conduct Bible study classes in their community.

This evolved into a lecture series on a variety of topics, and the "College in the Community," later known as "College in the Country," was born.

The program quickly spread to other communities, with faculty members tailoring their lectures to topics the communities were interested in.

It lasted into the 1960s, and is the basis for the present Department of Continuing Education.

West Georgia students were once allowed to smoke in class, at the instructor's discretion.

They were required to provide their own ashtrays.

National Alumni Association

In recognition of the fact that UWG's alumni community extends far beyond Georgia and the Southeast, the West Georgia Alumni Association has recently become the National Alumni Association.

In its effort to become truly national in scope, the association urges its members from all states to become active in association affairs, both by applying for election to the Alumni Board and by volunteering to organize alumni events in their area.

Alumni may contact Franklin Pritchett, Director of Alumni Aff airs, at (678) 839-6582 or fpritche@westga.edu for more information.

Alumni Board

Nominations for the Alumni Board are accepted annually and are solicited in Perspective. Interested alumni are encouraged to submit their name, or that of another alumnus, for consideration at any time. The Board’s nominations committee begins reviewing applicants in January.

Membership on the Board is a three-year commitment requiring members to attend quarterly meetings and to serve on one committee within the Board. The Board has 36 voting members and several "life" members. Terms begin and end at Homecoming.
