The Anthropology Department at the University of West Georgia, located in the Pafford Building, offers a broad introduction to the discipline of Anthropology. We are a traditional liberal arts major that prepares students to continue their formal education or to enter the general work force. Our Anthropology curriculum offers a wide range of undergraduate and a limited number of graduate courses that cover the traditional four fields. We encourage students to participate in conventional classroom settings as well as non-traditional courses.
Anthropology is the study of people and culture. It seeks to produce generalizations about people, their behavior, and culture to develop an understanding of human diversity. It is a broad discipline that includes:
- the study of existing cultures (Cultural Anthropology)
- past cultures (Archaeology)
- humans as biological organisms (Physical Anthropology)
- language as part of the human experience (Linguistic Anthropology)
