We look with satisfaction on a number of significant accomplishments:

• The Certificate Program in Distance Education enrolled seventy-four participants (full capacity) from eight countries during its second and third sessions. Program evaluations indicate a very high level of satisfaction among program participants, and a need for the development of add-on courses. The first add-on course for program participants is currently being developed and will be offered in Spring 2000.
• The Distance Education Center, together with Zoo Atlanta, collaborated to offer an Honors Enrichment Series through GSAMS. The program, known as "Virtual Voyage to Zoo Atlanta," involved twenty-three UWG honors students in workshops exploring zoology, biology, and animal research issues.
• A Distance Learning Workgroup charged with collaboratively developing and supporting degree programs offered via distance was formed. The group consists of key staff and faculty involved with distance learning.
• A proposal for a master’s in Educational Leadership is currently being considered by the Board of Regents.
• A subcomittee of the Distance Education steering committee worked to develop guidelines for continuing education courses delivered through distance technologies. The guidelines addressed quality controls, dispersion of revenues, and division of responsibilities.
• The Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration received more than 6000 hits in its first year, and has attracted articles from several well-known individuals involved in distance education at the national level. Several individuals have written the editorial staff expressing appreciation for the online publication, which focuses on a topic in which literature and research is extremely scarce.
• Continuing to address the needs of distance administrators, the distance learning staff began planning for a Distance Learning Administration Conference to be held next Spring 2000. The conference will be directed at a national audience, will probably be held at a resort location in Georgia. The Distance Education Center will collaborate with the Department of Continuing Education in this project.
• A "Distance Learning Student Success Guide" was developed and is available for distance students for less than $5 in the UWG bookstore. The guide includes comprehensive technical information, learning strategies, and information on resources.
• The number of students enrolled in distance courses in FY 99 was 2528. This represented a 52% increase over FY 98 (1668). UWG was consistently ranked in the top five institutions with the highest distance learning credit hours, and the top two for highest graduate distance learning credit hours.
• Forth-seven credit courses were delivered over the Internet (at least 50 % online) during UWG’s second year of on-line learning, up from 10 in FY 98. Forty-six courses were delivered through GSAMS (up from 34 the prior year). 104 additional courses utilized an online component for 50 percent or fewer of the class meetings.

1. Continue to develop UWG’s presence as an international leader in Distance Learning Administration through the addition of an Annual Conference on Distance Learning Administration, in addition to further promotion of the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration, and the Distance Learning Certificate Program.
2. Evaluate, refine and improve distance learning staff development programs.
3. Increase collaboration with other supporting departments, including the registrar, library, the Graduate School, and ITS to streamline support process into solutions scalable for a rapidly-growing population of distance students.
4. Lead DL Workgroup into the development and implementation of at least three degree programs offered via distance by the end of FY 2000.
