FAQ
Welcome to UWG's eCore Advisement Center

eCore are online core courses that are provided through a state-wide collaborative program. eCore courses are taught entirely online, except for the occasional proctored exam. Courses satisfy the basic core curriculum requirements at any University System of Georgia institution.

Q. Where do I find more info on eCore?

Q. How do I get help with my eCore course in WebCT?

If you have questions about your course's content, you'll want to ask your instructor for help. Once you are able to login to your course in WebCT, you can contact your instructor using WebCT's Mail tool. The mail is private and you can choose to address it to the instructor only so your message will only be seen by you and the instructor.

You could also make your question public knowledge on the discussion board. There's probably another student in your course with the same question and maybe someone else already knows the answer. There's nothing to be afraid of... wouldn't you just raise your hand and ask the question if you were in a tradititional face-to-face course?

If you do not get an appropriate/timely response from your instructor, please email your eCore advisor: Cheryl Coppolella (last names A-L) or Stacey Rowland (last names M-Z). Be SURE to include your full name, your student ID (917) number, and the exact course and section that you are referring to.

Any issues concerning technical problems or info on how to use the WebCT tools, should be referred to the University System of Georgia's Online Support Center:.

Q. I've registered for an eCore class. When can I login? Is there anything I should be doing ahead of time to prepare for the class?

Students cannot login to their courses until the official first-day of class, but they might be able to login to the WebCT introductory site called "myWebCT" up to 2 weeks beforehand... this site may include a student orientation course (not worth any credits - just there to help you prepare for the online experience).

Login steps:

Step 1: Go to this web site address: https://ecore.view.usg.edu (do not type “www” and be sure to note the "s" on the end of http...).

Enter your username: (sent to you from the eCore office via mail or e-mail)
Enter your password: (sent to you from the eCore office via mail or e-mail)

**If you add a course during the drop/add period it may take up to an additional 2 days to get your username and password.

If you did NOT receive a letter or e-mail containing your username & password:

Please check your myUWG student mail, as all official UWG notices are sent there. If the email is not in your inbox two days after registering during drop add:

First, check to make sure that your student email account inbox is not full or over quota. If you have reached the limit, you will not recieve any new messages! Delete any old unnecessary messages to free up space in your inbox (Hint: larger messages that take up more space will be marked with a red exclamation mark). If your inbox is not full, either your information has not been loaded into the eCore database yet the contact information that was submitted is not valid. Please contact your UWG eCore Advisor for help: Cheryl Coppolella (cherylc@westga.edu) or Stacey Rowland (srowland@westga.edu)

Step 2: Click once on OK. This will take you to your MyWebCT Homepage. This page includes links to all the courses in which you are enrolled. It also includes other vital info that you should review.

Step 3: To access a specific course, click once on the Name of the course. Please disregard any eCore courses from previous semesters. It is our policy to keep these courses in WebCT for 3 semesters and they can not be removed.

If you experience problems while attempting to log into your course, don't panic. Go to....

1. Access this Knowledge Base, visit: http://help.view.usg.edu

Students using the AOL web browser sometimes experience technical problems, please read the "AOL USERS READ THIS. It is strongly advised that you use Internet Explorer or Netscape as your web browser for these classes.

Students enrolled in mathematics courses will need to install the Math Viewer Plug-in. This plug-in is necessary for you to view the equations in the courses. Download the "WebEQ Browser Controls" from, http://www.dessci.com/en/products/webeq/webeq.asp You will not be able to use campus computer labs for the Math courses requiring the Math Viewer Plug-in.

Q. How do I drop or withdraw from an eCore course?

During eCore drop/add (see calendar dates: http://www.alt.usg.edu/ecore/courses/calendar.phtml) you can drop an eCore course on Banweb (login through myUWG and click on the Banweb tab).

After drop/add is over, you cannot drop an eCore course. If you decide to withdraw, you will recieve a "W" grade on your transcripts and you will not be refunded any amount of the tuition (unless you withdraw from the entire semester). In order to withdraw from an eCore course, you would need to submit the online withdrawal form:

http://www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/ecore/withdraw/wga_policy.html See the Registrar's refund policy: http://www.westga.edu/~registra/refunds.html

If you have questions reguarding a refund, contact the BURSAR's office at 678-839-4737.

The deadline to withdraw from the semester is the midpoint of the eCore semester. Click here to find the upcoming deadlines - registration dates, dates classes begin, dates classes end, and the semester's midpoint:http://www.alt.usg.edu/ecore/ (Withdrawal deadline is the midpoint of the semester).

Except for cases approved by the Academic Dean of eCore, a withdrawal after the mid-semester withdrawal deadline wil result in a "WF" (Withdrew Failing).

If you feel you may qualify for a hardship withdrawal or a military withdrawal, contact the at 678-839-6438.

Q. How and when do I register for an eCore class?

NOTE: The Academic Calender for eCore is not the same as the UWG academic calendar... eCore classes fill up FAST. Check the Class Bulletin to see if the courses you need are already full or if there are seats available. Click on the "Undergraduate Subject Listing" category for the particular semester you are wanting to attend, then scroll down, look at the bottom right column until you see ECOR-eCore. Click on ECOR-eCore to see a listing of all eCore courses for the particular semester.

Q. I am considering taking an eCore class. What are they like? Is eCore easier?

Please note that online courses take more self-management skills than traditional courses. Roughly 30- 40% of students either fail or withdraw from fully online eCore courses. On the withdrawal forms most students explain that "the course was harder than I had expected - I thought online classes would be easier" and "it was difficult to make myself login and do the work up to 3 times a week - I need someone to make me attend class..." On the flip-side, nearly 40-50% of UWG eCore students earn either an A or a B in their eCore courses. It seems that students either love online learning or just can't manage learning on their own. This resource can help you decide if online learning is right for you: http://www.alt.usg.edu/sort/

All information is presented online. The instructor facilitates discussion, offers feedback, and grades assignments/papers/tests. You do not have to logon at a specific time on a specific day - you just need to meet the deadlines. There are at least one and possibly two times that you will have to travel to a specified location in order to take a proctored exam (this varies from course to course and the CHEM courses require some lab meetings as well). The "specified location" can be a testing center near you - wherever in the world you live - you just have to coordinate the location with the testing coordinator in advance. see http://www.westga.edu/~ecore/ecoreexams.php

eCore courses DO NOT follow the same start dates or other deadlines as regular UWG courses. eCore deadlines are located here: http://www.alt.usg.edu/ecore/courses/calendar.phtml and For specific UWG dates and deadlines for Advanced Registration, see The Scoop.

Click here to find the upcoming deadlines - registration dates, dates classes begin, dates classes end, and Withdraw Deadlines: http://www.alt.usg.edu/ecore/courses/calendar.phtml

Note that eCore classes cost more. See this FAQ: http://www.westga.edu/~ecore/tuition.php

Q. I need to schedule an ecore proctored exam. How do I do this?

Every eCore class requires the students to take at least one proctored exam. Therefore, you will have to arrange to take this test at a physical location where someone will observe and guarantee the security of the exam.

See this website for instructions: http://www.westga.edu/~ecore/ecoreexams.php
