HOPE Scholarship

Georgia 's HOPE Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement throughout high school and/or while in college. The scholarship provides funds to address many of the costs associated with tuition, fees and books for students who are pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in Georgia's colleges and universities.

Eligibility for HOPE Scholarship:

  • Student must have graduated from an eligible high school with a “B” average, as defined by the HOPE program, or have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average at the college level at specific credit-hour checkpoints.
  • Be enrolled as a degree-seeking student
  • Meet HOPE’s Georgia residency requirements
  • Meet HOPE’s U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen requirements
  • Be in compliance with Selective service registration requirements
  • Be in compliance with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990
  • Not be in default or owe a refund on a student financial aid program
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress

Applying for the HOPE Scholarship as an Incoming Freshman:

Applying for the HOPE Scholarship as a Continuing UWG Student:

HOPE Award:

  • A HOPE eligible student will receive the cost of tuition plus a portion of the mandatory fees for any amount of hours they are enrolled.
  • A HOPE eligible student enrolled in 6 hours or more will receive a $150 book check each semester. A HOPE eligible student enrolled in less than 6 hours will receive a $75 book check each.

HOPE Checkpoints:

HOPE eligible students must maintain a HOPE grade point average of 3.0 and will be checked at:

  • 30 attempted hours,
  • 60 attempted hours,
  • 90 attempted hours and
  • End of every spring semester

Hope eligibility can be lost and gained at the attempted hour checkpoints but only lost at the end of spring checkpoint. If you believe you have gained or regained HOPE eligibility and are at an attempted hour checkpoint please follow the directions above for applying for HOPE as a continuing UWG student.

HOPE GPA:

The HOPE GPA includes all coursework completed after to high school graduation including:

  • learning support courses
  • remedial courses
  • independent study courses
  • repeated courses (if a grade was “forgiven” by UWG it is still included in the HOPE GPA)

UWG students who have completed at least one semester can view their HOPE GPA through their Secure BanWeb account under Student Services, Financial Aid, HOPE Eligibility.

HOPE Limits:

  • A student is ineligible to receive the HOPE scholarship if the student has attempted 127 semester hours of college degree credit, regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while earning the degree; or
  • A student has received payment from any combination of HOPE Scholarship, Hope Grant and Accel Program funds totaling 127 semester hours; or
  • A student earned a baccalaureate (four-year) college degree, regardless of whether or not HOPE funds were received while earning the degree.

Promise Teacher Scholarship Loan

The PROMISE Teacher Scholarship Loan — a component of Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program — provides forgivable loans to students who aspire to be teachers in Georgia public schools. If you commit to teach in a Georgia public school, you will pay less for your education. For a four-year commitment, you can receive up to $6,000 in financial assistance.

The purpose of the program is to attract undergraduates into teaching profession and provide them with financial assistance beginning their junior year and continuing through their senior year. In return for the scholarship, the student agrees to teach after graduation in a Georgia public school system at the preschool, elementary, middle, or secondary level for one academic year for each $1,500 disbursement.

HOPE Teacher Scholarship Loan

The HOPE Teacher Scholarship Loan Program — a component of the lottery-funded HOPE Program — provides service cancelable loans to individuals seeking advanced education degrees in critical shortage fields of study. You simply repay your loan by teaching in a Georgia public school after earning your advanced degree, saving you money and helping fill the need for qualified professionals in these teaching fields. It's a program that benefits Georgia teachers and every student in their classroom.

Governor’s Scholarship

The Governor’s Scholarship was created to recognize Georgia's high school Valedictorians and STAR Students and encourage them to attend a public or private college or university in Georgia by providing scholarship funds.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

Robert. C. Byrd Honors Scholarship was created to promote academic achievement and to reward exceptional high school students who show promise of continued excellence by providing scholarship funds for study at the college level.

Charles McDaniel Teacher Scholarship

The Charles McDaniel Teacher Scholarship was created to recognize and reward outstanding Georgia college juniors and seniors seeking a teaching degree at a public college in Georgia. This program was established in honor and memory of Dr. Charles McDaniel, former State Superintendent of Schools.

Georgia’s Hero Scholarship

Georgia ’s Hero Scholarship was created to provide educational scholarship assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones and the children and the surviving spouses of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves.
