Scholarships

UWG offers a variety of academic, performing arts, and other scholarships. You may view Scholarship Information on the Financial Aid web page at www.westga.edu/finaid. Applications are available for the UWG General Scholarship as of January 1 each year with an application deadline of March 1st. You may also check with your department for information on available departmental scholarships. The State of Georgia may also offer scholarships or grants under several different categories. Please visit www.GaCollege411.org and review the information for qualifications and applications.

Ted and Maryon Hirsch Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Theodore R. Hirsch of Carrollton. Mr. Hirsch was Chief Business Officer at the University for several years. The annual award is given to a graduating senior who continues studies at West Georgia as a graduate student. The recipient is selected on the basis of superior scholarship by a committee under the direction of the Committee on Graduate Studies. Special Scholarships

To apply for the following scholarships, please fill out the University of West Georgia General Scholarship Application. This application will be available in the Financial Aid Office. The deadline to return the general scholarship application will be March 1st of each year.

Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship - The University of West Georgia Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi established a scholarship to be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student. The primary consideration will be academic achievement with preference given to a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

Collus O. Johnson Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student interested in adult education, pursuing a cooperative doctorate degree. Need is a secondary consideration. 

Scholarships in the College of Arts & Sciences

The History Department offers a special graduate assistantship each semester in the Georgia Political Heritage Program. This video/audio tape collection begun in 1985 to capture the valuable but disappearing memories of Georgia's political leaders as they retell their role in the state's political history. Lee W. Walsh Political Science Award - Awarded to undergraduate or graduate student with involvement in the political process. Contact the Department of Political Science and Planning at 678-839-6504 for more information. Award amount not listed. 

Elizabeth Gellerstedt Wright Scholarship - The Elizabeth Gellerstedt Wright Scholars in Music are graduate and undergraduate students selected by audition to receive scholarship monies derived from an endowment established by Mr. and Mrs. J. Carter Wright in the memory of Elizabeth Gellerstedt Wright. Contact the Department of Music at 678-839-6516 for more information. 

Grace Talley Richards Scholarship Fund - The Grace Talley Richards Scholarship will be awarded annually by the Art Department to art majors and minors to help defray travel costs associated with the Art History Museum Seminar courses. The Art Department Scholarship Committee and the professor teaching the Art History Seminar courses will determine the scholarship recipient. The committee will consider candidates' financial need and academic aptitude, with an emphasis upon need. Contact the Department of Art at 678-839-6521 for more information.

Scholarships in the College of Education

  • Pearl Nix Scholarship - Any student pursuing a masters degree in Education
  • Peggy S. Steelmon Award - Middle Grades Education major
  • Bernice Freeman Memorial Scholarship - Secondary Education-English major
  • John Pershing Memorial Scholarship - Counseling & Educational Psychology major
  • Edwin M. Blue Scholarship - Administration & Supervision (Ed. Leadership) major
  • Priscilla Bennett Family Scholarship - Awarded to students pursuing certification or masters degree in school media. Part-time or full-time students who have completed one term in the media program and show professional promise are eligible to apply.
  • Leona Ingram Scholarship - The Leona Ingram Scholarship is awarded to a teacher who is pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in education. Financial need is a consideration in making this award. The monies are derived from an endowment fund. The recipient is selected by the Dean of the College of Education and the College of Education Scholarship Committee. You may apply for this scholarship at the Dean's Office in the College of Education.
  • Annie Belle Weaver Memorial Scholarship - The Annie Belle Weaver scholarship is awarded to a graduate student who is pursuing a masters degree in Media Education. The recipient is selected by the Dean of the College of Education and the College of Education Scholarship Committee. You may apply for this scholarship at the Dean's Office in the College of Education. Please call 678-839-6570 for more information.
  • Dr. Thomas W. Sills Scholarship - This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Dr. Thomas Sills, the first Dean of the (then) School of Education at West Georgia College. This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Education. Rotates annually from department to department. Contact the College of Education for more information.

Scholarships in the Richards College of Business

  • Charles W. Cox Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to superior MBA applicants. Also awarded to juniors and seniors majoring in Finance, Marketing, or Management. Award not listed.
  • Garrett, Stephens, Thomas, & Co. PC Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student majoring in Accounting. Financial need may be a consideration, and preference will be given to students from Carroll, Haralson, Polk, or Heard counties.  Departmental Scholarship Committee awards scholarships. Application deadline is Spring Semester. Contact the Department of Accounting and Finance for more information at 678-839-6469.
  • The Minority Scholarship for Excellence in Accounting - Awarded to an ethnic minority rising senior or rising first year graduate student with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better; 3.5 GPA or better in Accounting courses; member of a National Association of Black Accountants student chapter or affiliated with a National Association of Black Accountants chapter. The NABA (JB Blanton Scholarship Fund) awards scholarships in June.  Deadline to apply is May 1st of each year.

Private Scholarships

A variety of scholarships are available from many sources such as organizations, church groups, employers, etc. Additional scholarship information and application information may be found by searching the web or by visiting your local library.
