What is Sigma Tau Delta?
Sigma Tau Delta is an international honor society for
English majors and minors. The
society seeks to recognize students who
excel in their literary studies and serves both to applaud what
students have achieved and enrich their experience of literary study
through local and national events.
What does Sigma Tau Delta do?
The West Georgia
Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta sponsors a number of activities each year.
Specific events depend on the interests of the current membership but
in the past have included theater trips, a literary costume party at
Halloween, informal gatherings at local restaurants, student research
colloquia, career discussions and much more. These activities are only
a starting point: marathon readings, literary film nights, literary
debates...it all depends on what students think would make their time
as English majors more interesting and rewarding.
How can I join Sigma Tau
Delta?
Membership application forms are available in the
English Department Office and from Dr. Mitchell. Prospective members
must be English majors who have completed two English courses beyond
English 1101/1102, have a B average in their English classes and have
completed at least three semesters of college study. Applications
should be accompanied by a check for $37 (your lifetime membership
fee), made out to Dr. Margaret Mitchell.
Do I need to be a member to
attend activities?
No! Members help plan and organize activities, but
everyone is welcome to attend events.
How can I find out more
about the national organization?
The national organization sponsors a conference
(the 2006 conference will be held in Portland, OR where you can meet
and share ideas with English majors from around the country, or you can
submit your creative work to The Rectangle, Sigma Tau Delta's
national magazine of literature and criticism. Members are also
eligible for scholarships through the national organization, and all
members receive the national newsletter, letting you know what's going
on in literary studies around the country. Click the banner below to
visit the national website.
How can I suggest
activities or get more information?
Have you got an idea for a Sigma Tau Delta event? A
suggestion for our Southern Film Series? Do you have questions about
joining Sigma Tau Delta or participating in an activity? Contact Dr.
Margaret Mitchell (mmitchel@westga.edu),
Dr. Josh Masters (jmasters@westga.edu)
or Patrick Whittier (pwhitti1@my.westga.edu)
in the English Department with any thoughts, questions or ideas about
the chapter at West Georgia.
Some events already happened, but there
is still more to come! Below are some pictures from the 1st Annual
Students Vs. Faculty Kickball Game. Further down on the page, take a
look at the events still in the works!
Fall
Schedule of Events:
Friday, October 13, 2p.m.:
Graduate School
information session. This is an open forum where students who aspire to
continue their education beyond the baccalaureate level can converse
openly with faculty to answer questions about this process. Don't miss
out on this, it will be an exemplary opportunity to get all the answers
about a confusing process (that shouldn't have to be!). We will meet in TLC
2237.
Tuesday, October 31, 7:30 p.m.:
Halloween Party. Back by
popular demand this year, Sigma Tau Delta is working to host a Literary
Halloween Party. This should prove to be quite exciting. Faculty and
Students should be thinking about their favorite character (or author)
and get to work on an original and creative costume. Location: Dr. Emily
Hipchen's House, directions to follow.
