Attendance: Each unexcused absence after one will result in one letter grade reduction in the course. Two tardies count as one absence. Students are responsible for seeing that the roll is corrected on the day they are tardy. Class will be held regardless of inclement weather. To be excused, absences and tardies must be previously approved by the instructor to be due to circumstances beyond the student's control. Reasons for absences must be documented by the TA. Students unable to participate should still try to attend (this will not count as an absence). Absences may be made up with the permission of the instructor by attending a Wednesday night workout or two after class workouts on Monday.

Clothing: A Judo gi will be assigned to each student on the third day of class. A usage fee of $20.00 is due at the time of gi assignment. The fee partially covers maintenance and storage of gis and mats between semesters. Purchase of gis is available to students after taking two semesters (see class T.A. for details). There will be damage fees assessed for damage that occurs to the gi while it is checked out. Damage incurred during normal class activity will not be subject to a fee. The fees are as follows: damage to the gi jacket $20.00, the gi pants $10.00, the gi belt $5.00. Damage includes, but is not limited to, rips or tears, and bad staining. The student will be responsible for their gi from the time the gi is issued until the gi is collected at the end of the semester. If, when the gi is issued, anything about the gi that may be considered damage is noticed, the student is responsible for bringing attention to the damage on the night the gi is issued. No watches, rings, necklaces, or jewelry of any kind may be worn. Tobacco use is not permitted in the building. Please do not chew gum during class. To be counted present a student must dress out in their gi. The gis will be taken up on the day of the final exam, please bring clothes to change into on that day.

Grading: The University grading policy for this class has been mandated to be 40% participation, 30% skills exams, and 30% written exam. There will be two skills exams: one midterm and one final. Each will count 15% of the course grade. Participation includes attentiveness, cooperation with partners and instructors, and effort put forth during class activities.

Mid-term Exam: First semester (Beginning Judo) students are expected to demonstrate the 7 grappling techniques covered in class (holds, chokes, armlocks), of these the 6 best scores will be averaged for the mid-term exam grade. Second semester (Intermediate Judo) students will be graded on all 7 techniques and will be expected to know each technique by its Japanese name.

Final Exam: First semester (Beginning Judo) students are expected to demonstrate the 8 throwing techniques covered in class, of these the 7 best scores will be averaged for the final exam grade. Second semester (Intermediate Judo) students will be graded on all 8 techniques and will be required to know each technique by its Japanese name.

Written Exam: The written exam will cover information given in this syllabus as well as information given throughout the course. The format will be multiple choice, short answer, and matching.
