Judo Techniques


         The following fifteen techniques will be covered this semester. There are seven grappling techniques and eight throwing techniques. You are strongly encouraged to learn the translations for the Japanese names for each of these. The translations can be considered a short description of the technique in most cases.

 
Holding Techniques (Osae waza)

    • Kesa gatame  -  Scarf hold
    • Kami shiho gatame  -  Upper four corner hold
    • Tate shiho gatame  -  Front four corner hold
    • Ushiro kesa gatame  -  Reverse scarf hold


Choking Techniques (Shime waza)

    • Hadaka jime  -  Naked strangle
    • Nami juji jime  -  Natural cross strangle


Armlocking Techinques (Kansetsu waza)

    • Ude hishigi juji gatame  -  Arm taking cross armlock

    • Throwing Techniques (Nage waza)

        • O soto gari  -  Major outer cut
        • Tai otoshi  -  Body drop
        • Sasae tsuri komi ashi  -  Lifting pulling proping foot
        • Ippon seoinage  -  One-arm shoulder-throw
        • De ashi harai  -  Advanced foot sweep
        • O goshi  -  Major hip
        • O uchi gari  -  Major inner cut
        • Tsuri komi goshi  -  Lifting pulling hip
