Text:    A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers, 7th edition.  Authors: Billstein, Libeskind, and Lott.

 

Learning Outcomes:  The student shall demonstrate:

 

  1. a better understanding of standard vocabulary and symbols of elementary mathematics;
  2. an ability to reason logically and to provide justifications and coherent arguments for the plausibility of conjectures;
  3. an ability to use geometry in real-world problem solving;
  4. well developed spatial sense including both two- and three-dimensional figures (tessellations, symmetry, congruence, similarity, polygons and other curves, polyhedra, etc.);
  5. a better understanding of measurement including the metric system;
  6. a better understanding of geometry and measurement from a historical perspective;
  7. an ability to solve measurement problems involving perimeter, circumference, area, volume, temperature, and mass;
  8. a better understanding of synthetic, coordinate, and transformational geometry with an emphasis on problem solving;
  9. an ability to develop lesson plans with respect to geometry for the p-8 level;
  10. a better understanding of the uses of a variety of manipulatives and other materials for p-8;
  11. a better understanding of the vision of mathematics education as put forth by the NCTM’s Principles and Standards (2000);
  12. a better understanding of the scope and sequence of elementary school mathematics program;
  13. a knowledge of current professional literature in the field of mathematics education.

Note:  20 sections in 14 class periods.  Keep up with the work.

Random           Quizzes.  Based on homework and class discussions.  0-2 points for correctness both mathematically and grammatically.

 

3                      Tests of 75-minute duration that will occur during class periods.  There will be a week notice of the exam.

 

1                                            Comprehensive Final. This will be held in class on August 1 from 7:30am to 9:30am.  The comprehensive may be used to replace your lowest in class exam score.

 

 

Your course grade is based on 5 parts as follows:

 

Project                                                             20 times your points/total points assigned

Test 1                                                               20 times your percentage from test       

Test 2                                                               20 times your percentage from test       

Test 3                                                               20 times your percentage from test       

Final*                                                               20 times your percentage from final

Quizzes(extra)                                                    5 times your points/total points assigned

 

* This score could replace a lower score from any other test.

                       

 

Letter grade:     A > OR = 90 >

                        B > OR = 80 >

                        C > OR = 70 >

                        D > OR = 60 > F
