Curriculum Vitae

Lou Andreas-Salomé

I wrote my dissertation on the fictional works of Lou Andreas-Salomé, a prolific author whose theoretical arguments and narrative strategies prefigure those of French, German and American feminists in the latter decades of the twentieth century.

Film

From UFA to X-Filme Creative Pool, German film has remained innovative in terms of story, technique and aesthetics.  I am particularly interested in contemporary German directors’ representations of the German past and how these representations participate in the scripting of a new German national narrative.

20th Century German Literature

German postwar literature is vast and varied, reflecting two cultures and forever engaged in the negotiation of memory and forgetting, politics and aesthetics, and in the regeneration of a tolerable German post-war cultural identity.  I have worked intensely on authors such as Christa Wolf, Thomas Brussig and Bernhard Schlink.

To know another language is to know another world.
