Groups & Group Process


Course Description:
An introduction to factors affecting the formation, evolution and development of groups and group process. Examines factors affecting groups and group process in a variety of settings. Includes discussion of leadership styles and their impact on group functioning and group process.
 

Course Objectives:
· self understanding and the understanding of others
· ability to analyze and synthesize issues in a psychological context
· development of a theoretical base for understanding and appreciating factors affecting group process and group functioning
· development of ability to become more effective participant in groups, as a member or a leader
· development of greater familiarity with issues affecting the functioning of at least one type of group observed 6-8 weeks by student)

Course Requirements:
· assigned readings
· observation of groups
o Students must arrange a one-time observation session of a political. community, Executive Board, governing body, jury, educational or governmental task force or commission, or similar group. [Type of group to be approved by instructor in advance of observation.] Focus of observation: general structural considerations, roles, etc.
o Students must arrange for observation of an on-going group, self-help group, family group, civic group, educational group or similar group for a period of 6-8 weeks. [Type of group to be approved by instructor in advance of observation.] Focus of observation: group growth and development..
· summary reports of observations to be distributed and discussed in class
· annotated bibliography of at least 3 articles and 1 book related to type of group observed for assignment above
· research paper focusing on particular factor affecting group functioning, or application of concepts Learned in relation to specific group context
· final exam
 

Course Evaluation:
report: observation of group structure: 10 points
reports: on-going observation of group ( 3 reports at 10 pts. each):  30 points
research paper 25 points
final paper: 15 points
annotated bibliography: 15 points
oral presentation to class:  5 points
 Total Possible Points: 100 points
