Goals/ Objectives:

This class is designed as both a laboratory and as a seminar.  It is organized around four main goals:

1. to provide a survey of several major and some marginal (i.e., out of the mainstream) forms of psychotherapy (e.g., Humanistic-Existential, Cognitive-Behavioral, Gestalt).

2. to begin to develop your own philosophy and style of helping.

3. to consider pertinent issues in counseling and therapy (e.g., ethics, burnout, attraction)

4. perhaps most important is to safely learn and practice foundational elements of counseling (active listening, reflecting meaning, etc.).  This last goal will be met through practice in and outside of class.  Some portion of nearly each class will involve demonstration and practice of various communication and therapeutic methods.

Grading/ assignments

Grades will be determined as follows: active participation in class including presentations and work in triads (25% of your final grade); a paper (there is no final examination) that will be a transcription, critique and analysis of an interview (counseling practice session) that you conduct (50%). You will begin by making a tape recording of a session that you facilitate, transcribe a minimum of twenty minutes of this session, identify key elements of your conversation based on the techniques (especially Ivey’s) explored in class, then critique your interventions including suggestions for other comments you might have said or directions that might have been pursued.  A final in-class essay on the Corey material will be worth 25% of your grade.
