PSYC 4881 - Independent Study
 
 Course Description:

Title and description of specific courses to be inserted at time of offering. May be repeated for credit.
 

Course Objectives:

This course allows the student to pursue the in-depth study of some topic of personal interest. The student proposes a topic and, in collaboration with the instructor, makes a contract regarding the readings to be done. Meeting regularly, student and instructor discuss the agreed-upon readings both as a topic of academic interest and as a matter of personal relevance to the student. Both academic learning and personal transformation are at stake in this course. A written report completes the course. The report should show critical appropriation of the agreed-upon readings as well as evince the personal relevance of this learning experience. The report may need to be written as a preliminary draft and reworked into a finished piece.

To have the experience of doing an in-depth study of some topic of interest

To learn how to limit a topic of research to a manageable size to learn to think critically about, analyze, and synthesize reading materials

To produce a report of high quality on a topic of research

To receive the benefit of one-on-one collaboration with a mentoring instructor ‘P to learn how academic study can become an occasion for personal growth
 

Course Requirements:

selection of an instructor and, in collaboration with the instructor, agreement on materials to be studied in the course

study of the agreed upon readings

regular meetings with the instructor for discussion of the assigned readings and of their personal relevance

production of a written report of about 2O pages on the a agreed-upon readings or, alternatively, a paper utilizing the course readings
 

Course Evaluation:
The final grade will depend on :
the depth of preparation for meetings with instructor fidelity to the regularity of the meetings
the quality of the verbal exchanges and of the final written report
