ProgramVisionPDF Program Vision (detailed)

The program's combination of interdisciplinary perspectives, qualitative research, individual and social focus, self-awareness and reflexivity has a unique value. The emphasis is on an intimate empiricism adequate to the task of addressing the complexity and subtlety of human life from multiple points of view. This is an approach that balances attention to human subjectivity and value with rigorous detachment and discrimination.

Such research respects the insight that experience is always situated and that inquiry into context is critical to transformation. This is not a clinical program, although it fosters therapeutic skills that are applicable in a range of areas beyond traditional individual, couple, or group counseling. All students must complete an internship in which they develop expertise in a particular social setting or toward a specific human concern. Some arenas of practice:

  • Psychoeducation
  • Transformative pedagogy
  • Community and family building
  • Group and organizational facilitation
  • Program design and evaluation
  • Contemplative practice
  • Teaching and research
