Inspiring Success
“If it had not been for the two scholarships I received through the Annual Fund, I would not have been able to afford the expenses associated with child care, the daily commute from Cedartown, and also pay for tuition and books. When I think that complete strangers reached out to give me this opportunity when I thought it was out of my reach, I can't help but feel indebted to them. They gave me the gift of education, which I believe is one of the greatest gifts of all.”
Earning a degree did not come easy for Kim Holder. In high school in Tennessee, she had dreams of attending Auburn, but college costs were a problem and an in-state university was more affordable. Holder worked three jobs while attending two years at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga full time.
But after marrying a childhood sweetheart and moving to Georgia, the combination of attending classes and working while her husband worked two jobs proved to be too much, and she put her education on hold. Then Holder learned about UWG’s eCore program and was inspired to try it out. A perfect fit, it allowed her to complete two years of studies online before setting foot on UWG’s campus. With the help of eCore and two Annual Fund scholarships, Holder finally gained the success she deserved for all her hard work. She graduated magna cum laude in May 2008 and is now pursuing a doctoral degree.
