Animals and Culture (also offered as 5134 for graduate students)
No prerequisites.
The relationship between humans and animals is complex, multi-dimensional and historically-derived. This course will examine primary theories related to ecology and symbolism and identify the historical and contemporary role of animals in human society. Topics included in the course are domestication and co-evolution, animals in ritual use, mythical animals, animals and social organization, the phenomenon of pets, and the commoditization of animals as mass food products in Western society.
