2010 Retiree Reunion: Please be sure to come to our annual Retiree Reunion at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, July 17, 2010. You should have already received an invitation to this event in the mail. Remember that our annual shindig is really a reunion to get all of our retired faculty and staff back together again once a year. The additional bonus is to recognize the new crop of retirees for each year and to congratulate all of them. Last year we had a great turnout at Z-6 so we thought we would go with the same venue this year. We will have the Lower Level of Z-6 with access to the outdoor patio area. Dress is casual, and there will be plenty of complimentary food and drink (alcoholic and non). Piano entertainment will again be provided by the talented Bernie Wong, and retiree medallions will be given out to our honorees.
Here is a list of retirees we'll be honoring this year: Patricia Arp, Anita Immele, Linda Picklesimer, Martha Bonner, George Keller, William Schaniel, J.W. Brown, William Lankford, Jamie Shirey, Susan Colgate, Gloria Laseter, Loretta Smith, Cita Cook, Mary Frances McLure, Susan Smith, Sylvia Cook, Jerry Mock, Clifford Swint, Henry Garrison, Delores Moore, Wilma Terrell, Tony Grizzard, Maxine Newsome, Georgia White, Margaret Hughes, Alexa North, Walter Wilcox
Please RSVP by July 12 to Dale Duffey at (678) 839-6582. You are welcome to bring one guest with you. We look forward to seeing you all there, and if you already have a medallion, please wear it.
Retiree Medallions: The Office of Development and Alumni Relations and the Association of Retired Faculty and Staff continue to make the retirement medallions available free of charge. It is available to all who did not receive one in person at a former retiree reunion. The medallion is bronze with the university logo on the obverse and the engraving on the reverse, and it hangs from a ribbon. The engraving shows your name, department and years of service. To obtain your medallion, contact Dale Duffey at (678) 839-6582.
Retiree Photos: At this year’s reunion, we would like to project a slide show up on a wall screen of retirees enjoying their favorite activities. Photos of hobbies, trips, family and friends are all appropriate—whatever you are doing to enjoy your retirement! This will provide all of us with an enjoyable prelude to the evening of refreshments and awards. Send one or more prints showing what you’ve been doing to Frank Pritchett at the Alumni House (1601 Maple Street, Carrollton, GA 30118) or e-mail photos in JPEG format. He will take it from there. We promise you will get your prints back in the mail, and you will enjoy seeing what your former colleagues have been up to these past years. We hope to do this annually so as you engage in your favorite activities this year, go ahead and send us your photos for next year’s event. Thanks!
Third Thursday ARFS Travel Programs: Jan Ruskell began a travel program for the ARFS group last year. It meets the 3rd Thursday of every month. We have had some very interesting presentations on river boat cruising and travels to places such as Alaska, Egypt, Brazil, New Zealand and Hungary. Our next program will be Thursday, July 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Neva Lomason Library in Carrollton. Nancy Farmer will present a program on Turkey. Following the program there will be an optional lunch at a local restaurant for more opportunity for visiting and discussion. If you would like to share your travels with the group, please contact Jan Ruskell. She is always looking for new presenters for future programs.
Note on TRS Pensions: Read this article in the Savannah Morning News regarding our TRS pensions and some of Roy Barnes’ ideas regarding that fund.
Information/Announcements to Share: If you have any news to share with our members, our Listserv is a perfect way to share it. As a member of the Listserv, you can send announcements or share information to other retirees and you will receive announcements posted to it. Recently, we have had Bob Claxton use the listserv to share information with the group. If you have information to share with the group, in the “To” field on your e-mail type the address (UWG-ARFS@westga.edu). All 100+ members will be able to instantly receive your news.
Dinner Get-togethers: During the Summer the University Club will continue to provide opportunities for retirees to socialize with each other and with current faculty/staff by sponsoring dinners (dutch treat) beginning at 5 p.m. at the locations listed below on the following dates:
- June 25 – Corner Café (on the Carrollton Square)
- July 9 – Alley Cat (on the Carrollton Square)
- July 23 – Samba Loca (off the Square across from Cultural Arts Center)
The University Club is open to all faculty, staff and retirees from the University of West Georgia. Family members are also welcome. For more information, contact Susie Fishman-Armstrong at 678-839-6303.
Ideas Welcome: If you have an idea for some type of activity you would like the ARFS group to sponsor or you would like to head up, e-mail us or come to the next Steering Committee meeting (announced via our Listserv) and let us know. That’s how we got our very successful monthly travel program. Perhaps you would like to do a talk on a book you’ve written or some research you are working on?
Sign-up for our listserv to receive and share the latest events and announcements! To sign up for our listserv, just e-mail Debbie Novak or Glenn Novak, and we will sign you up. Remember that if you’ve changed your e-mail address, you have to notify us so we can update you on the ARFS listserv.
