February 2007

Planning Meeting:  We will meet at the Alumni House at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 23rd to begin planning our annual Retiree Reunion, which is scheduled for July 14th. Try to attend and bring ideas for improving our event, which pays tribute to each year’s crop of retiring faculty and staff.

ARFS Website:  We are excited to announce that we have a new website! The new website is designed to keep retired faculty and staff up-to-date on events, activities and perks that are available to retirees from UWG.  Feel free to give us any feedback or suggestions you may have.

photoRecent Honors:  Anne and Fred Richards were awarded the UWG Founders  Award at this year’s Centennial Gala for all of their hard work and dedication to West Georgia over the years.  This is the highest award that the university bestows.  Debbie and Glenn Novak received the Outstanding Retired Faculty/Staff Award at this year’s Homecoming Luncheon in November.

*Update* Richard Dangle Theatre Dedication
*Please note the change in date and time.*

Richard Dangle Theatre:  To honor the late Dr. Richard Dangle’s many contributions over the years to the university in general and to the performing arts in particular, UWG is re-naming the Black Box Theatre on campus The Richard Dangle Theatre.  Dr. Dangle was the Dean of the School (later College) of Arts and Sciences for many years and was a tireless supporter of the fine arts on and off campus.  All retirees are invited to attend the dedication ceremony on Friday, April 13 at 7:00 pm in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.  Among other items on the agenda for the evening will be the official unveiling of a portrait of the former Dean, painted by Bruce Bobick, recently retired Art Department Chair.

photoRetiree Medallions: The Office of Development and Alumni Relations and the Association of Retired Faculty & Staff continue to make the retirement medallions available. As it turns out, it is still not too late to place your order if you have not yet done so. This effort is an attempt to make available, free of charge, the special medallions to all faculty and staff who have retired from UWG. These are the new and improved versions of the medallions and they were given out most recently at the 2006 retirement reception, and represent a higher quality and more refined iteration of our first year medallion given out in 2005.  The medallion is bronze with the university logo on the obverse and the engraving on the reverse, and hangs from a ribbon. The engraving shows your name, department, and years of service. It will be available to all who did not receive one of these at the 2006 reception (or did not receive one in the mail). So, if you did not order or receive one of these newer medallions, and you would like one as a memento of all your years of service to UWG, we have a procedure in place. Simply contact Dale Duffey at (678) 839-6582 or dduffey@westga.edu, and give her your name as you would like it to appear engraved on the reverse side of the medallion, your former department or division, and your years of service. She will take it from there and will place a subsequent order and mail it to you when it comes in.

photoSpecial Gift to UWG:  The following is a portion of a recent press release from the UWG Department of Communications and Marketing and will be of interest to many of our retirees.  Come see the new sculpture next time you are on campus and near the new Campus Center building.

“The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce presented a commissioned sculpture to the University of West Georgia as a “birthday present” during the university’s year-long observance of its centennial.

Local artists Helen Helwig and Machiko Ichihara created and designed “Centennial Tribute,” a concrete and clay mosaic sculpture that is mounted on a concrete pedestal near the new Campus Center.

Up-Coming Events:  Here is partial list of some up-coming events that may be of interest to our retired faculty and staff:

The Theatre Company will perform them in the Black Box of the Townsend Center February 21-24, 2007 at 7:30 pm and on Sunday, February 25, 2007 at 2:30 pm.  Tickets cost $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for seniors.
