Annual Reunion:  The annual retirement reunion will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2009 in Z-6.  Mark your calendars and try to join us for our annual event. Details to follow.

Listserv: Please send your e-mail address to gnovak@westga.edu if you are not already on the ARFS listserv. With the budgetary crisis going on with UWG, we can save money by e-mailing you information, and you can receive the latest information faster! If you are not quite sure you are on the ARFS listserv, go ahead and e-mail us and we will check. Thanks!

photoKudos: Retired Professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures Dr. Cecilia Castro Lee recently published her book, entitled "El Sueño de la Razón y la pesadilla de la Historia en las trilogías de Carlos Rojas / The Dream of Reason and the Nightmare of History in Carlos Rojas’s Trilogies." Based on contemporary literary theory, this study analyzes how different narrative strategies produce diverse readings of Rojas’s fables. The book explores the narrative art of Spanish writer Carlos Rojas (1928- ) based on the analysis of his mature fictional works, or the Trilogies written between 1978 and 1995.

Trips:  If you are looking for a vacation tour for this Spring, check out retired business professor Leland Gustafson’s homepage. He and his wife currently have a South American cruise planned. An African Safari-Tanzania is on the schedule for 2010.

Seeking Volunteers: The Carrollton Senior Adult Center needs volunteers  to conduct programs in the afternoon anytime between the hours of 1-4 p.m. at the Senior Center.  Arts, crafts, genealogy, scrap booking, music, computers, cooking, avoiding fraud and many other subjects would be appropriate.  Volunteers are also needed to escort seniors on day trips. The Center is located at 220 West Ave.  If you are interested in helping and sharing your expertise with others, please call 770-832-0189. They would appreciate it!

photoRetiree Medallions:  The Office of Development and Alumni Relations and the Association of Retired Faculty and staff continue to make personalized medallions available free to all faculty and staff who have retired from UWG.  Contact Dale Duffey at 678- 839-6582 or dduffey@westga.edu .

Soup Kitchen:  The Empty Bowl Fundraiser is at the Ag Center on Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The event benefits the Soup Kitchen "Bowl and Soup," with a $10 Silent auction and boutique items available.

Recent GPTV Trip: On December 6, recent UWG Library retiree Jan Ruskell and others helped out with the GPTV fundraising event, continuing the ARFS involvement with this worthwhile project. Anne Richards once again arranged for our participation. The fundraiser was a big success.

Monthly ARFS Programs: We had a good suggestion at our January 30 planning meeting that put forth the idea of ARFS sponsoring a monthly program for retirees. The event would include speakers on a variety of subjects. We could hold the program late morning and after the program attendees could participate in a group lunch at a local café on or near the square. A possible location for this event would be Neva Lomason. Or we could go to Z6 and do a lunch and learn type event. Please e-mail us some feedback on these ideas or e-mail us with any suggestions on programs you might like to hear. If you would like to be a presenter, let us know that too so we can more easily try to get this idea off the ground.

photoFriday Happy Hours:  The Friday Happy Hours sponsored by the University Club continue this year and run from 5-7 p.m.  Join former and current faculty and staff members for refreshments and socializing at the following locations on the dates listed.  For events at the Alumni House, a $5 donation is requested to help defray the cost of refreshments and non-alcoholic beverages. Bring your own beer or wine if you wish.
