It could focus on an author (Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka), period (20th-century, Weimar, post-war), filmmaker (Rainer Fassbinder, Tom Tykwer), a literary or filmic movement (New German Cinema, Expressionism), or a theme (the outsider, ambiguity, violence).
