Social Media Guidelines

Overview
Social media can help you find a job and connect with people who can assist you with growing your career. However, it works both ways. Social media when used the wrong way can backfire and jeopardize a job offer or even your current job. It’s important to be careful and consider what you shouldn’t do, as well as what you should do, when using social media to job search.

LinkedIn
Do:

  • Have a fully completed profile
  • Have someone read over your profile to make sure your grammar is up to par and everything you include on your profile is clear
  • Update your profile weekly
  • Join Groups
  • Add Contacts

Don’t:

  • Include your GPA on your LinkedIn Profile
  • Link your profile to your Twitter or your other social media accounts
  • Add contacts that you do not know well
  • Use your profile as a means to post your resume
  • Include your nickname to your profile
  • Lie about your professional experience on your profile
  • Link unprofessional groups to your profile

Facebook
Do:

  • Be consistent in the quality and quantity of your posts
  • Control your privacy settings. Assess how much you want strangers and friends to see
  • Engage in conversation. Respond or comment on posts in a timely manner
  • Post relevant stories and articles specific to industry
  • Be sure that your Facebook information is consistent with your other social media sites

Don’t:

  • Complain about the job search, employers, and/or current employers
  • Write personal status updates about relationships. Instead, focus on industry related issues
  • Post up pictures that paint you in an unflattering light
  • Spend too much time on websites that are not particular to your interests
  • Join random groups. Rather, join those that are specific to your industry and career goals. Avoid anything too political
  • Swear, use all caps, or spam

Twitter
Do:

  • Share your accomplishments
  • Start following a small amount of people
  • Keep your tweets short and to the point
  • Be yourself
  • Give advice and be helpful to others
  • Be consistent in quality and quantity of tweets
  • Re-tweet what others post and give others credit

Don’t:

  • Become repetitive
  • Follow too many people. It may appear that you are spamming
  • Auto-direct message people
  • Swear, use all caps, or spam
  • Overuse hash tags
