Center for Civic Engagement
The University of West Georgia Center for Civic Engagement promotes social responsibility and public service by promoting research and scholarship, developing programs, and facilitating community based experiential learning within the university community.
The University of West Georgia Center for Civic Engagement is a collaborative endeavor of the university's Center for Public History, Thomas B. Murphy Center for Public Service, the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory, Georgia's Political Heritage Program and the Irvine Sullivan Ingram Library, and was developed to
- provide experiences and programs that illustrate how social responsibility can be integrated into lives and careers through community outreach related to training and education
- support research and build an archives preserving both the history of the state and region as well as of past programs, preserving the Center's field work for future researchers
- improve the public good by enriching the scholarship and character of the University of West Georgia, promoting public dialogue and building community in support of the university's and Board of Regents' strategic plans
- increase efficiencies by combining support services, collaborating on program development, and seeking external funding
The Center is headquartered in the university's Irvine Sullivan Ingram Library. It provides on-site and field experiences for students in history, political science, archaeological, archival and museum studies within the Waring Archaeological Laboratory and the Annie Belle Weaver Special Collections and in support of the State Capitol office installation of former Georgia House Speaker Thomas Bailey Murphy, a centerpiece exhibit open to the public within the university library. Students also collaborate on program development in association with the endeavors of the library, the Center for Public History, the Thomas B. Murphy Center for Public Service, Georgia's Political Heritage Program, and the Department of Anthropology's Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory.
