Dr. Carol Gingerich is a graduate of Columbia University, Teachers College (NY) from which she received a Doctor of Education in the College Teaching of Music degree. There she studied piano with Karl Ulrich Schnabel and piano pedagogy with Robert Pace. She holds a Master of Music in Piano Accompanying and Coaching degree from Westminster Choir College (NJ) where she studied with Dalton Baldwin, Margo Garrett and Martin Katz. She also holds an Honours Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance degree from the University of Western Ontario (Canada). She has been Assistant Professor of Piano at Tabor College (KS), Adjunct Assistant Professor of Piano at Rider University (NJ) and has been a piano pedagogy instructor in Westminster Choir College’s “Professional Development Certificate” program. She has been staff accompanist at Trenton State College (NJ), Mercer County High School for the Performing Arts (NJ) and the Princeton Ballet Society (NJ).

Dr. Gingerich’s dissertation was titled “The French Piano Style of Fauré and Debussy: Cultural Aesthetics, Performance Style Characteristics and Pedagogical Implications”. She has given numerous lecture/recitals, conference presentations and piano teacher workshops on French piano style. Additionally, her piano interests are broad and she has written about and/or given presentations concerning: “Teaching and Learning Styles: NLP”, “The Pianist’s Encounters with Space”, “Remedial Reading for the Transfer Student”, “Intermediate Repertoire Choices Made Easy”, “Crossing Borders”, “Finger Weight Transfer”, “Robert Schumann: Madness and Bliss”, “’Beckoning with a Handkerchief’: Performing Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 81a”, “A Pedagogical Cyberspace Cruise to Youtube, Piano Flicks, and the Internet”, and “Time Management”. She has presented these topics at: The European Piano Teachers Association Convention (Rome, Italy), The World Piano Conference (European Piano Teachers Association, Novi Sad, Serbia), The World Piano Pedagogy Convention (FL, CA), Music Teachers National Association Convention (MO, and Toronto, Canada), The National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (Chicago), The National Group Piano and Pedagogy Conference (IL, TX), College Music Society Southern Convention, Westminster Choir College’s “Saturday Seminars in Piano Pedagogy”, Georgia Music Teachers Association Conference (MTNA), Georgia Music Educators Association Convention, New Jersey Music Teachers Association Convention (MTNA), The International Conferences on Parody and Imitation and on Madness and Bliss (GA), and The Piano Teachers Forum of Central New Jersey. Her articles have been published in American Music Teacher, Clavier, Journal of Research in Music Performance, Keyboard Companion, MTNA’s e-journal, and Piano Pedagogy Forum.

Dr. Gingerich is active as both a solo and collaborative pianist and has given concerts and masterclasses at Catholic University (DC), Columbia University (NY), the University of Florida, the University of Miami, and Northern Illinois University. Her UWG recitals include: “French Painting and Music”, “A Celebration of 20th Century Music”, “German Romanticism and the Bosendorfer Piano”, “Music Composed by and for Women”, and “Spring Piano Music”. She has toured Georgia with her colleagues from the music department performing the works of Georgia composers. With the Newtown Chamber Orchestra (PA) she premiered the Newtown Concerto by Mark Weber, Jr. and also performed Copeland’s Appalachian Spring. She has also been active as a freelance accompanist and vocal coach in the New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania area.

Dr. Gingerich has been a frequent adjudicator for piano competitions and her students have been winners of MTNA sponsored competitions,and have been admitted to highly ranked Masters in Performance degree programs. They are hired regularly to perform as pianists throughout Georgia, serve the community as church musicians, and maintain private piano studios.

Dr. Gingerich is active in finding opportunities for students to perform and teach, both on and off campus. Her students regularly perform for University Advancement events, for Tanner Medical Center’s “Harmony for Healing” program, and have several times been chosen as Arts Area winners in UWG’s “Big Night/Research Day” competition. Dr. Gingerich founded the “UWG Piano Project”, which for fifteen years has provided private piano lessons to children and adults from the community, while also providing employment and job experience for piano pedagogy interns. In 2014 she received funding for two new piano awards: The Betty Tolbert Smith and George Mann Awards. Dr. Gingerich initiated the process for UWG to become a Kawai Epic Institution which has provided UWG with all new instruments, including two top-of-the-line Shigeru Kawai pianos located in her studio.
