The online Master of Education with a Major in Media (School Library Media) degree is designed to prepare educators to become progressive, innovative, academically grounded school library media specialists; prepare school library media specialists to successfully design and administer effective school library media programs; pioneer innovative delivery options to maximize educational experiences; collaborate with all stakeholders to enhance student achievement; cultivate diversity of ideas, values, and persons responsive to changing needs and technologies; and promote the advancement of learning through scholarship and service.

The School Library Media track also leads to Georgia certification in school library media. 

Program Description

Students must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution to be admitted to the program. The program consists of 36 semester hours of graduate coursework. Studednts exit the program with a Masters of Education degree in Media and, after passing the GACE Media Specialist content exam, S-5 level certification in School Library Media. Students may begin the program any semester. Specific course requirements are determined through consultation with academic advisors. Any changes in the projected squenece need to be determined jointly between student and advisor in order for the student to be able to complete the program in a timely manner.

Tuition & Fees


The number of hours required to complete the program depends on the prior educational background of the student. If a student has teaching certification at the bachelor's level, the program usually consists of 36 semester hours of graduate coursework including 27 hours in media and instructional technology and 9 hours in psychology, curriculum, and research. Students exit the program with a Master of Education degree in Media and after passing the Georgia Certification Exam in School Library Media, S-5 level certification in School Library Media.

Psychology of Classroom Learning - CEPD-6101

Description: This course provides an in-depth study of the major cognitive and behavioral theories of classroom learning. Emphasis will be placed on enabling teachers and counselors to better understand how students learn; on helping educators identify and remove barriers that impede student learning; and on helping educators develop, utilize and advocate teaching practices, programs, and curriculum that lead to academic success for all. Theories of motivation, classroom management practices, and belief systems that promote learning will also be addressed.

Curriculum Trends and Issues - CURR-6575

Description: This course is a critical study of the design and implementation of curricula in the field of education.

Research in Education - EDRS-6301

Description: The study of the general principles of qualitative and quantitative research designs with an emphasis on students becoming consumers of educational research.

Administration of the School Media Center - MEDT-6461

Description: An overview of the procedures in planning, administering and evaluating a school media program.

Selection and Materials - MEDT-6465

Description: An overview of current materials, including all genre of print and no-print, all formats of fiction and non-fiction materials. An introduction to the criteria of evaluation and the tools and techniques used in selecting all types of materials and equipment for school library media centers.

Instructional Design - MEDT-7461

Description: The course provides an overview of systematic approaches to instructional planning, development, and evaluation.

Online Reference Sources and Services - MEDT-7474

Description: An introduction to reference sources and services, with, emphasis upon online sources and services, and to the development of reference skills in P-12 learners.

Technology for Media Services - MEDT-7477

Description: An introduction to technology for media services including basic computer operations, troubleshooting, and networking; internet issues, resources and applications; video resources and production; and technology training and instruction. MEDT 6401 or equivalent; MEDT 7461.

Cataloging and Automating - MEDT-7478

Description: Introduction to school library media cataloging and automation procedures including Sears, Dewey, CIP, and MARC records.

Practicum - MEDT-7487

Description: Current issues in school media centers will be examined. Course requirements will include exhibiting professionalism and documenting impact on learning. Documentation of all volunteer experiences completed throughout the program will be compiled. An electronic program portfolio will be developed and prepared for sharing with peers and instructors.

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • GPA of 2.7 or higher in most recent degree
  • Passing score on the GACE Program Admission Assessment, or one of the following exemption options:
    • Teacher certification
    • Passing score on the GACE Program Admission Assessment  
    • ACT score of 43 or higher (English/Math)
    • SAT score of 1000 (Verbal/Math)
    • GRE score of 297 (Verbal/Quantitative) (1030 if prior to 8/1/2011)
