Dr. McCandless' interests are in the area of social inequality, with a focus on women's issues. She initiated the Women's Studies program at West Georgia and previously served as its Director. Her publications and research primarily focus on contemporary women's issues, with a special interest in violence against women. Her work has appeared in Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Sociological Viewpoints, Free Inquiry in Creative Sociology, Journal of Marriage and Family, and as chapters in a variety of texts. Complementing her teaching and research is her extensive applied work with local community organizations, including the Rape Crisis Shelter. Dr. McCandless' teaching specialties include social inequality, women's studies, and sociology of family. She is also a member of the Honors Program faculty. She works closely with those students who share her interests and frequently sponsors students in student paper competitions and at professional meetings.
