The Counseling Center at the University of West Georgia is dedicated to promoting a safe and welcoming environment to all students. We echo the Mission Statement of the university in seeking “affirmation of the equal dignity of each person by valuing cultural, ethnic, racial, and gender diversity in students, faculty, and staff.” We view diversity as encompassing, but not limited to race, ethnicity, nationality, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious/ spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, physical and mental ability, body type/ size, military status, and other types of diversity. We recognize issues related to diversity influence students’ personal growth such as development of identity, experiences with discrimination and oppression, and managing stereotypes. It is our goal to help students grow and flourish in an inclusive environment where diversity is embraced and celebrated. As professional counselors we take active steps to be culturally self-aware, knowledgeable, and skillful in working with students from all walks of life. We embrace this learning as an on-going, ever evolving process. We encourage students to make an appointment at our center to explore their own experiences and concerns that may arise throughout their collegiate career.
