Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.

Sigma Gamma Rho was created on November 12, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis Indiana by seven school teachers. These young educators embarked to make the sorority a leader in national service while developing bonds of sisterhood and scholarship. Service is such a cornerstone of this organization as it is reflected in the motto: Greater Service, Greater Progress. Chapters seek to help where ever there is a need in the surrounding community. National projects include Operation Big Book Bag, Wee Savers, Project Reassurance and the Sigma Youth Symposium. Sorority activities are used to train its members to be leaders in every profession. It also creates an environment that fosters lifelong friendships and networking opportunities. As the signature international program for Sigma Gamma Rho, Project Reassurance was originally developed to provide health education, support and nurturing for expectant teen mothers and teens who are parents. The project has now evolved to focus more on Healthy Choices, Healthy Living and Healthy Generations (H3) to help reduce teen pregnancy through a comprehensive year round program addressing the factors that lead to teen pregnancy - low self-esteem, diet and economic issues - while also providing support and guidance when it does occur

Sigma Gamma Rho has over 500 chapters in the U.S., Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Germany and Korea. The Lambda Epsilon chapter was chartered at the University of West Georgia on February 24, 1989.

Soaring to greater heights of attainment around the world, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., as a leading national service organization, as met the challenges of the day and continues to grow through Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service.
