Types of Aid
Grants
- Pell Grant is awarded based on need as determined by the FAFSA and does not require repayment under normal circumstances.
- FSEOG (Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant)
- FSEOG is awarded to Pell Grant recipients on a first-come basis. You should have a completed financial aid file by March 1st to increase your likelihood of receiving FSEOG.
Scholarships
- UWG Scholarships
- General Scholarship-The General Scholarship is actually a group of scholarships offered at UWG. Although it includes academic, athletic, and performing arts scholarships, some scholarships are based on need. You should complete the FAFSA to increase your chance of receiving a scholarship.
- This scholarship is available for continuing students and transfer students only. Freshman students may apply for the freshman scholarships offered through the Admissions Office.
- Departmental Scholarships
- Many UWG Departments offer additional scholarships, which would be posted on that particular department’s website.
State Scholarships

HOPE Scholarship
The HOPE Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who are residents of Georgia, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, meet UWG’s academic progress rules, etc. - It is important to remember that you can only begin receiving HOPE at certain times – as an incoming freshman or once you cross 30, 60, or 90 attempted hour checkpoints.
- Once a student loses HOPE, s/he can only regain it once.
- Zell Miller Scholarship
The Zell Miller Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshman who are residents of Georgia, graduated from high school with at least a 3.7 GPA, received either a 1200 SAT score or 26 ACT score in one sitting before graduating high school, and maintain a 3.3 GPA in college.
Private Scholarships
Private scholarships are scholarships offered outside of UWG.

- Check with any group, organization, church, etc. of which you may be a member to see if they offer any scholarships.

Subsidized student loan
- The subsidized student loan is awarded based on need as determined by the FAFSA and grade level. Once awarded a student loan, you are required to accept the loan, complete an Entrance Counseling Session, and sign a Master Promissory Note before any funds may be paid to your account.
- Repayment begins six months after graduation or once enrollment is less than half time (6 hours).

Unsubsidized student loan
- The unsubsidized student loan is awarded based on grade level and subsidized eligibility.
- Once awarded a student loan, you are required to accept the loan, complete an Entrance Counseling Session, and sign a Master Promissory Note before any funds may be paid to your account.
- Repayment begins six months after graduation or once enrollment is less than half time (6 hours).

Parent PLUS Loan
- The Parent PLUS Loan is a loan in the parent’s name based on the parent’s credit and is only available to parents of dependent students.
- To apply:
• Visit StudentLoans.gov and complete Parent PLUS application, AND
• Complete the Parent PLUS Request Form #3 and return it to the Enrollment Services Center in Parker Hall or fax it to 678-839-6439

Private/Alternative Educational Loan
- An alternative educational loan is a loan outside of UWG with a lender or bank.
- If you choose to apply for a private loan, you should apply for a NONFEDERAL loan with the lender of your choice and have a current FAFSA on file.
- As an equal opportunity loan provider, UWG cannot recommend any particular lender over another. However, you may find a helpful list here to get you started.

Federal Work Study Program (FWS)
- Federal Work Study is a work program awarded based on need as determined by the FAFSA and on a first-come basis.
- Students are required to obtain a FWS position to take advantage of these funds. However, FWS positions are limited and cannot be guaranteed. You should have a complete financial aid file by April 1 to increase likelihood of obtaining FWS funds and positions.
- FWS funds are received as a biweekly paycheck and are not applied to your bill.
