Georgia's HERO Scholarship Program

The Georgia HERO Scholarship Program was created by state law enacted earlier this year. The program provides educational assistance in the form of grants to certain military personnel, and their children. GSFC recently sent a memorandum to financial aid administrators, reiterating HERO grant eligibility requirements. To be eligible to receive a grant through the Georgia HERO Scholarship Program, an individual must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be a Georgia resident who is a member of the Georgia National Guard or a U.S. Military Reservist who completed at least one qualifying term of service. A qualifying term of service is defined as deployment overseas, on or after May 3, 2005, for active service to a location outside of the United States and its territories designated by the Department of Defense as a combat zone, for a consecutive period of 181 days. OR
  • Be a biological child, adoptive child, or legal ward of a Georgia resident who is a member of the Georgia National Guard or the U.S. Military Reserves who completed at least one qualifying term of service. The student must have been 25 years old or younger during the qualifying term of service.  OR
  • Be the biological child, adoptive child, or legal ward of a Georgia resident who is a member of the Georgia National Guard or the U.S. Military Reserves who was killed or received 100 percent disability as a result of injuries in an eligible combat zone. The student must have been 25 years old or younger during the qualifying term of service.
