10 Steps to Apply for Financial Aid

_______    1. CREATE A FINANCIAL AID FILE, notebook or envelope where you and your student keep copies of all of the student's financial aid information. For each step listed below, make a copy of what is submitted to our office or the federal government and keep it in this file.

_______  2.  COMPLETE THE FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) ONLINE. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. This is a federal government application so have your student's and your most recent tax return in hand when ready to complete this form with your student. When the FAFSA is complete, the student will be given a pin number. This pin number will be used every time the student applies for financial aid. You, as the parent, will wish to apply for a pin number as well so you can sign the FAFSA electronically. You can apply for a pin at http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp. Keep these pin numbers in your records.

If your student wishes to receive HOPE , he/she must complete the GSFAPPS at http://www.gacollege411.org/. Transfer students must also complete a HOPE Inquiy form found under Online Forms.

_______  3.  BE ADMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA. Contact our Admissions office by email at admiss@westga.edu or by phone at 678-839-4000 if you have questions regarding the status of your student's Admissions application.

_______  4.  SUBMIT ANY VERIFICATION DOCUMENTS REQUESTED FROM OUR OFFICE. Some students do not need to take this step. IF your student has to complete this step, we will send your student a letter telling him or her which documents to complete. Copies of tax returns, birth certificate or marriage certificate may be required as submissions. The sooner your student gets this information to us, the quicker your student will get to Step 5!

_______  5.  WE WILL MAIL YOUR STUDENT AN AWARD LETTER. Freshman year will be the only year your student will receive a paper award letter in the mail from us. The award letter will tell your student what types of financial aid he or she may receive. Some forms of aid require your student to take additional steps. These will be outlined in the award letter. If your student receives an award that includes a student loan and your student does not wish to take it, your student may cancel this by completing a form found on our website at http://www.westga.edu/financialAid/index_2774.php.

THE NEXT STEPS ARE SPECIFIC TO DIFFERENT TYPES OF AID YOU MAY SEE ON YOUR STUDENT'S AWARD LETTER. THE AID IS LISTED IN THE STEP.

_______  6.  FORD DIRECT SUBSIDIZED OR UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN. Your student will be sent an email through his or her UWG email account with instructions on completing the entrance counseling session online.

_______  7.  FORD DIRECT SUBSIDIZED OR UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN. Your student will need to complete an Electronic Master Promissory note. Your student will be sent an email through his or her UWG email account when it is time to complete this step. Your student will need his or her Federal Pin number from Step 2.

_______  8.  FEDERAL WORK STUDY. During the first week of classes, your student will want to go to Career Services in Parker Hall and seek assistance. The Federal Work Study jobs are actually posted outside the Career Services office.

_______  9.  PERKINS LOAN. If your student has been awarded the loan, have your student complete the form that will be emailed to the student through his or her UWG email account.

_______  10.  If you and your student see that additional assistance in paying for your student's education is needed, you as the biological parent of the student can take out a Parent PLUS loan. This application is available on our website at http://www.westga.edu/financialAid/index_2774.php.

If you find you need assistance with these steps or have other questions, contact the Department of Financial Aid. Our office will contact your student via the U.S. Postal Service until your student has attended Orientation. After your student attends one of the Orientation sessions, we will then contact your student only through his or her new UWG email account. Encourage your student to check this email account regularly.
