The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures educates students to become better global citizens through instruction in foreign language, literature, film and culture. Through this study, students gain further knowledge of their own language and culture and are able to make informed cultural comparisons.
We offer language, literature, film and culture courses in French, German, and Spanish.
Our aim is to become a top destination for students in the state of Georgia and beyond who are passionate about foreign languages and cultures, and who seek to engage critically with questions of diversity, multiculturalism, and globalization as they manifest themselves in a variety of countries, languages, and cultural artifacts. We endeavor to make contact between and among cultures a daily reality for the general community at the University of West Georgia and to thus enhance multicultural and global awareness and sensitivity.
In accordance with the mission statements of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and of the University of West Georgia, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is committed to fostering global citizenship, a critical understanding of the world in all its complexity, and cross-cultural awareness through the rigorous investigation of cultures and languages. Aware of its vital role within a liberal arts education and the core curriculum of the University of West Georgia, the department offers courses in language, literature, film, and culture which uniquely equip our students with the linguistic and critical-thinking skills needed to succeed in increasingly globalized and diverse work environments and to develop creative solutions to the problems of tomorrow. Our study abroad programs offer students hands-on experience in negotiating across cultures and adapting to new contexts and situations. We enrich intellectual growth and scholarly inquiry through the innovative research of our students and faculty, and through robust, degree-granting programs in French, German, and Spanish. Our department also contributes to K-12 education in the region by developing outstanding teachers. We enhance campus life by involving students and the community in extracurricular activities that foster multicultural and global awareness. We provide thoughtful and thorough mentorship to our students and view learning as a life-long process that necessarily extends beyond the classroom and national frontiers. Finally, we are deeply invested in our mission of service to the university, the community, and the greater region.
