The University of West Georgia's 31st Annual Interdisciplinary Conference in the Humanities will be held September 22-24, 2016 on the University of West Georgia campus in Carrollton, Georgia.
The topic for this year's conference is Nature/Culture/Commerce
The Keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Renée Gosson, Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Bucknell University. Dr. Gosson is co-editor of Caribbean Literature and the Environment: Between Nature and Culture and co-producer of a documentary, Landscape and Memory: Martinican Land-People-History.
Her current research focuses on the commemoration of the transatlantic slave trade, slavery, and abolition in France and represents an extension of her scholarship on colonial memory and lieux de mémoire in the French Caribbean. Her talk, “Commemoration and Reparation: ‘Materializing’ the French Atlantic Slave Trade,” will look to national laws as well as key examples of public history as a way to understand France’s recent attempts to recognize its participation in the transatlantic slave trade and slavery on national as well as local levels.
