Art

Description

What is art? Why do humans feel compelled to make art? How has art changed over the centuries, as well as artistic motivation? What does being an artist actually entail, day to day? These are some of the questions that we will discuss in a semester-long investigation of the visual arts. The discussion-based course will cover a broad range of material from the concept of art to the nuts and bolts of what it takes to be an artist. After a few introductory sessions discussing what art is, students will visit each program in the department for two weeks at a time, spending time with a faculty member from each program to learn about their area (these include Art Education, Art History, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture). Nuts-and-bolts discussions will include “what to do with an art major” and “how to do research.” Extracurricular activities will also be planned, such as field trips to Atlanta for the High Museum of Art and The Contemporary Art Center.

For which students?

The learning community is oriented towards art majors and pre-art majors. Pre-Art students can use the learning community to get a taste of what art classes are like while pursuing their core requirements and thinking about potential majors. Art majors, meanwhile, will ensure steady progress through the program by committing to a learning community; the community would also help majors get to know each other and forge a community that will last through their careers at West Georgia. In the first year, students would take 5 courses each semester. Of those ten total, 6-7 would count towards the university core (assuming the proposed XIDS course would count towards Area C), and 3-4 are Art Department courses (these would count towards an Art major).
