UWG and Friends Present Screen on the Green
Four Carroll County foundations have joined together to host the first annual Screen on the Green on Friday, June 1, at the University of West Georgia campus. Fun family activities begin at 7:30 p.m. before the classic movie, “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” starts at dusk. The event is free and the community is invited to attend this celebratory evening under the stars.
Families can take advantage of the grassy hillside of Love Valley for picnics, games and relaxation. Wolfie, the UWG mascot, will help Tanner Health Source staff members entertain the children until the show begins. Free popcorn will be available and families are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic basket and relax with another generation of children who will delight in the heartwarming story of friendship and discovery.
The Community Foundation of West Georgia, the University of West Georgia Foundation, Inc., Carroll EMC Foundation and the Tanner Medical Foundation are sponsoring the outdoor event. Kim Jones, president of CFWG, said members of the foundations wanted to show their appreciation to the community for their support through the years.
“This is a wonderful way to say thank you to everyone in our communities,” said Jones. “It’s unprecedented to have so many foundations working together in Carroll County and it is a wonderful collaboration for everyone.”
Foundations have made a lasting impact upon communities with grants, scholarships made possible by gifts from citizens who can contribute any appreciable asset to a community foundation, which in turn invests the gift for growth and income.
Established in 1989, Tanner Medical Foundation generates funds to support new technology, programs and services for the Tanner Health System. The Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center, the Steve Worthy Maternity Center and Indigent Patient Care are a few of the medical programs supported through the Tanner Medical Foundation.
The Community Foundation of West Georgia has awarded grants to many local programs including projects and workshops at the Carrollton Cultural Arts, Parks and Recreation Department and the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. The foundation will distribute $310,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations in Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties during 2007.
The University of West Georgia Foundation, Inc. provides hundreds of academic scholarships and grants to students each year that pay for tuition, room and board and supplies. Many of the contributions are made through the annual A DAY campaign and through endowments from local citizens and businesses.
Since its beginning in 2001, the Carroll EMC Foundation has given communities more than $830,000. The Kiwanis Club of Carrollton, the Boy Scouts of America and the Bowdon Public Library are a few examples of the organizations that have benefited through Carroll EMC.
Love Valley is located between the Campus Center and the University Community Center at the end of University Drive. A rain date is scheduled on June 8. For directions to campus, campus map or more information on the Screen on the Green, call 678-839-6582.
