Wednesday, July 11, 2007

The University of West Georgia celebrated a decade of progress for the Richards College of Business this week. Ten years ago, the business school was named in honor of the late Roy Richards, Sr. ‘31, founder of Southwire, after the Richards Foundation, Inc., gave a $1.5 million gift to the school and to the university.

Southwire President and CEO, Stu ThornSince then, the RCOB has earned honors and recognitions that include a rare undergraduate and graduate accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International and an additional AACSB accreditation for its accounting programs, a rank only four percent of business schools in the world have earned.

The RCOB’s most recent accolade came in this month’s Atlanta Business Chronicle’s annual Professional Education Guide. The RCOB earned a rank of fifth largest business school in the area in enrollment numbers.

Dr. Faye McIntyre, dean of the RCOB and Sewell Chair of Private Enterprise, said the $1.5 million gift has been key to the success of the university and the RCOB in providing students the leadership and educational experiences they need to flourish as citizens.

“The endowment has allowed us to provide services and opportunities to our students and faculty that otherwise would not be available,” said McIntyre. “We have continued to grow in enrollment and in the high quality of programs. Stu Thorn and other Southwire executives have been extremely helpful and supportive to the Richards College of Business. We have continued to grow in enrollment and in the high quality of programs and we are very proud of the progress of the RCOB and proud to be associated with the Richards family and Southwire.”
