UWG Stories
Dr. Walter Todd
“The students keep me young at heart,” Todd said. “Seeing them excel at something new ... makes it all worthwhile.”
Dr. Walter Todd is committed to making higher education an adventure at the University of West Georgia.
From intramural sports including flag football and track to trips anywhere from the Ocoee River to Japan, the Intramurals and Recreational Services Department helps complete the college experience for participating students.
“There are physical and social advantages to being in Intramurals, but many of the benefits that come from our activities are less noticeable,” Todd said. “This program helps students accept campus life and look at UWG as a second home.”
With the second home comes a second family, which stems from the collective experiences students have with each other, according to Todd.
“These shared experiences and events are relatable to all the participants because they become bonded to their comrades, with whom they went through a challenging and self-growing personal experience,” Todd observed.
Todd says he has also encountered personal growth during his 15 years of being in Intramurals.
“I enjoy the outdoor activities the most because it is you against a force of nature: a long trail, a fast river or a well-hidden animal,” he said. “You have to master and combine several skills to meet that natural challenge you are facing. You have to understand many things and prepare for them.”
And while the physical aspects of working with this program keep him fit, he says it’s the students who make the job meaningful.
“The students keep me young at heart,” Todd concluded. “Seeing them excel at something new that they didn’t know they could do makes it all worthwhile.”
