UWG Hosts Political Debate
The University of West Georgia will host a debate for the candidates campaigning for the chairmanship of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners on Monday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Technology-Enhanced Learning Center (TLC), Room 1303. The event is sponsored by the Murphy Center for Public Service and the UWG Political Science Club.
The four candidates for the Carroll County Commission chair are John Denney, Bill Chappel, Jimmy Godbee and Tom Flippo. Voters are encouraged to attend the debate and bring questions for the question and answer portion of the event.
Dr. Stanley Caress, professor of political science at UWG and director of the Murphy Center, said anyone concerned about air pollution, water quality, traffic congestion, helping the poor and protecting the environment and other issues should attend.
“The Carroll County Commission actually makes decisions that impact so many issues,” said Caress. “Usually only a few thousand people vote in these elections and a few votes can change the outcome.”
The Murphy Center and the Political Science Club strive to utilize government and civic means to meet the needs of the people of Georgia and Carroll County. Both of these organizations work in cooperation with the American Democracy Project on campus to engage students, faculty and staff in civic issues.
