Greek Village
“The opening of Greek Village will help make 2009-2010 an immensely exciting year for the university ...” McClellan said.
Greek fraternities and sororities make up a very active and vibrant part of the University of West Georgia’s student body. Over the years, these fraternities and sororities have only dreamed of a place that they could call home. This dream has now become a reality with the creation of the Greek Village.
Acting as a small community within the larger UWG community, the Greek Village features a commons building and soon an outdoor basketball and volleyball court. Outdoor green space, adequate parking and 18 houses ranging in size complete the Village. Additionally, each house includes a living/chapter room, kitchen, laundry facilities, a mix of single and double bedrooms and semi-private bathrooms.
According to Dr. Melanie McClellan, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management, this space has been in the making for a long time.
“We have been committed to improving the quality of the university experience for students for many years,” said McClellan. “The opening of Greek Village will help make 2009-2010 an immensely exciting year for the university as we continue to be more of a destination university.”
Within the Greek system at UWG, there are three different governing councils: Panhellenic, Interfraternity and National Pan-Hellenic. In creating the Greek Village, it became possible for these different groups to share a space together. While this new space allows fraternities and sororities to enjoy their college experience together, it is also about something more.
“National research continues to show that students who are involved in campus life are more academically successful than those who are not involved,” said McClellan. “Greek students at UWG have high graduation rates, are very involved in community service and are active alumni. This Greek Village will allow us to make that system even stronger.”
