UWG Stories
Campus Center
“Our Campus Center is competitive with other colleges' recreational facilities,” said Picklesimer.
In the university setting, students often feel bogged down by the tremendous weight of academics and the responsibilities therein. It is during times like these that many students desire a place to relax and unwind. Responding to students’ needs, the University of West Georgia created this kind of facility in the Campus Center.
Having been called the “Center of Life” on campus, the Campus Center acts as a place where students can both play and learn in an upbeat, carefree atmosphere. Including a 48-foot climbing wall, a 13,000-square-foot fitness facility, a 9,000-square-foot ballroom, a basketball court and a game room, the Campus Center provides something for everyone, whether it is a student or faculty member.
Linda Picklesimer, director of the Campus Center, believes that this facility has become very important to UWG students.
“This building is so impressive that students have a perception that UWG is somehow more collegiate now,” said Picklesimer. “Our Campus Center is competitive with other colleges' recreational facilities.”
Also included within this space are offices that house the Center for Student Involvement, the Department of Campus Recreation and numerous student organizations, including the Student Government Association (SGA), the Student Activities Council (SAC) and the Greek Leadership Governing Councils.
According to Chris Geiger, interim director of the Center for Student Involvement, this facility, along with all that it offers, has caused a positive stir within the UWG community.
“The Campus Center has created a real sense of excitement,” said Geiger. “Students are feeling more valued by UWG when we are able to respond with facilities that meet their needs.”
