Mariam Abuhaideri

"Thank you, West Georgia, for what you are making of me."

She traveled thousands of miles from her home in Pune, India, to fulfill her dream of an American education. Mariam Abuhaideri, a 24-year-old senior studying mass communications and international relations, has found a family at the University of West Georgia.

“Coming to West Georgia was the best decision of my life,” said Mariam. “It’s like a second home to me.  As an international student you learn so much and make friends who help you succeed in this foreign land. The International Student Club does a great deal to make us feel comfortable and to share our cultures with American students.”

Mariam AbuhaideriMariam has made close friends at UWG and is active in the vibrant student life here. In her freshman year she became a student reporter for University Television Channel 13. She is developing her own talk show for international students called “Cultural Voyage.” She is also a columnist for the student newspaper, works as a student assistant in the Alumni Relations office and worked in a paid internship at two local newspapers this past summer.

“I would not have been able to do the same if I were in a fairly large school,” said Mariam. “In fact I’m doing better each semester with my academics with the help and encouragement of faculty and staff here. The professors make a great effort in helping students succeed in class. All the campus activities keep me from getting homesick. There is so much to do, I never get bored. Thank you, West Georgia, for what you are making of me. ”
