UWG to Honor Veterans
The University of West Georgia will host a Veteran’s Day Flag Ceremony and a Veteran’s Day Colloquium to honor veterans of the United States Armed Forces on Monday, Nov. 13.
The flag ceremony is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Front Campus Drive and will include a bugler playing the national anthem and President’s Bush’s Veteran’s Day address will be read.
The colloquium will begin at 6 p.m. at the executive dining room in the Food Services Building (Z-6). The UWG American Democracy Project is hosting the colloquium, which is the first event of its kind on campus.
A keynote address given by retired Superior Court Judge and WWII veteran Dan Winn will begin the evening. A panel discussion by several veterans will follow the address and will be moderated by Dr. Mel Steely, professor emeritus and director of the Georgia Political Heritage Project.
“I hope this colloquium will help the West Georgia community remember the service and sacrifice of our veterans and of those now serving in military service,” said Steely.
Winn will recall his Pacific Campaign experiences and examine historical accounts regarding America’s decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Participants in the panel discussions are UWG faculty and staff members who are veterans. Dr. James Burton, professor of real estate and marketing; Dr. Harrison McCraw, professor of accounting; Dr. Jack Jenkins, special associate to the president for minority affairs; George Hale, instructor of biology; Margaret Hughes, library associate; and Trey Cail, technology support specialist; are on the panel.
The event will be concluded by a moment of silence while music education major Jonathan Greene plays TAPS. The community is invited to this free event.
