UWG Smoking Policy Update

Tuesday, December 12, 2006

The University of West Georgia has adjusted its smoking policy to require a 25-foot distance from all buildings, vents and doorways for smokers.

The new policy will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2007, and complies with the Smoke Free Air Act passed by the Georgia state legislature in 2005. Theresa Jablecki-Kriel, director of the UWG Department of Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety, said the policy is a healthy approach to working and living on campus.

“We have a duty to protect the non-smokers from secondhand smoke,” said Jablecki-Kriel. “So, the answer to the question, where can I smoke, is any place that is 25 feet away from a building entrance, exit, window, vent or air intake system.”

The UWG smoking policy is designed to protect the campus population and visitors from second hand smoke and to encourage a healthier lifestyle. Smoking has been prohibited inside all buildings for several years.
