Some people are naturally curious about the interactions, behaviors and motivations of different groups -- and these people are UWG Sociology majors. In this fascinating program, students learn about what makes up the very fabric and values of a society through courses in social work, intergenerational relations, aging, racial and ethnic differences, grief counseling and more. And the world is always looking for people to turn a keen eye and an open mind on national and global differences and challenges—go on to work in government, education, research and consultation.

Why should I choose UWG's Sociology program?

  • All programs fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
  • The Sociology program seeks to provide students with mastery of basic academic subject matters along with the learning skills necessary for enrichment and continued success in academic and workplace environments following graduation.
  • The BS degree program provides sociology majors with a working knowledge of sociological theory and research methodologies, knowledge of findings relevant to issues of diversity, skills for the preparation and presentation of research reports, skills related to researching and seeking positions in the job market and in graduate education, and ethics.

Are there any special opportunities available?

  • Students are encouraged to pursue independent research, collaborate with professors on their research and present their work at annual conferences, such as the Georgia Sociological Association and the Southeastern Undergraduate Sociology Symposium.

    • Opportunities for sociology majors are strong in government and private-sector research and consultation, social service delivery and education.
  • Further Education
    • Undergraduates in sociology successfully go on to graduate level studies (Ph.D., J.D.), many fully funded by fellowships and research assistantships.

What kind of student organizations, clubs or honorary societies can I join?

  • The Sociology Club provides students with fun and support, career information, opportunities for community service, speakers and other activities.
  • Students who qualify are also invited to join the national sociology honor society, Alpha Kappa Delta.

What kind of facilities and equipment will be made available to me?

  • The department houses a state-of-the-art computer lab that aids students in their pursuits of research and other applied skills.
