UWG Stories

Kevin Harvey

“I can't wait to blend my education and my passion for music into a fulfilling career.”

Choosing a college can be a difficult, but for Kevin Harvey, the decision was easy. After sizing up the competition, he knew that UWG was perfect for him for it had a music performance major.

Kevin discovered his love for music at an early age and ever since has dreamed of a career in performance.

“I started playing during summer camp at church,” he said. “When I would have free time, I would sneak into the sanctuary and start playing.”

Kevin HarveyKevin continued to play the piano throughout middle and high school and has played many memorable performances, the first of which occurred during a church service.

“I felt a sense of joy after I finished because it was my first performance in front of an audience,” Kevin recalled.

He has come a long way since his first time performing. Since he’s been at UWG, Kevin has played at many university functions. He also traveled to North Carolina to perform with a gospel group called Claudius Craig and Loose the Familiar.

“I had the chance to play with other professional musicians, some of whom have recorded with national recording artists,” Kevin recalled.

Kevin said he owes much of his drive and inspiration to Dr. Carol Gingerich. UWG’s intimate size has allowed him to have piano lessons with Gingerich, which he said have helped him tremendously.

“Her love for music allows her to take different approaches to each student because every student doesn't learn the same way,” Kevin said. “She pushed me to do better each week, and I am going to take that inspiration and apply it to my future career in music.”

As for the future, Kevin hopes to continue growing as a performer, traveling with other artists and performing all over the country. He ultimately hopes that he can become a minister of music at a church.

Kevin concluded, “I can't wait to blend my education and my passion for music into a fulfilling career.”
