WGTC presents Crumbs from the Table of Joy

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Don’t miss out on the final production of the West Georgia Theatre Company’s 2006-07 season as WGTC presents “Crumbs from the Table of Joy” on Wednesday through Saturday, April 18 – 21, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, April 22, at 2:30 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts at the University of West Georgia.

“Crumbs from the Table of Joy” is a provocative drama exploring social and racial issues in the 1950s. Written by playwright Lynn Nottage, this heartfelt drama portrays an African American family and a beleaguered 17-year-old grappling with racial tensions in America in a colorful world of fantasy and hope. Audiences will share the journey of personal growth, triumph and loss with the Crump family.

Atlanta actor Geoffrey Williams, who directs the play for the WGTC, received a Jennie Award for best actor in a lead role in “A Raisin in the Sun” and recently completed his role as Marcus in “False Creeds” with the Alliance Theatre.

Greg Hurd of Carrollton portrays Godfrey, the father of the Crump family, and said “Crumbs” is play of many passions.

"People should come see this play because it is a play about everything: politics, religion, sex, gender roles, racism, relationships, family and survival in an era that marks social changes on the horizon,” said Hurd. “The play is set in 1950 and I think it represents how the social, political and religious environments were on the verge of shaping the lives of black Americans in the 20th century."

Other UWG students in the production are: Brittany Molina of Duluth, stage manager; Hope Mullinax of Buford, property designer; Matt Hambrick of Marietta, sound technician; and Ian Rowswell of Adel, lighting designer.

Tommy Cox, associate professor of theatre arts, and Alan Yeong, assistant professor of theatre arts, contributed as faculty advisors and set designers for the show.

Tickets for the performance are $10 for general admission, $7 for senior citizens, and free for UWG students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Townsend Center Box Office from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 678-839-4722.
