University of West Georgia professors from the College of Social Sciences spent their lunch hour today donating books to Carrollton’s newest Little Free Library. Faculty and staff in the college donated over 50 books for children and adults, more than doubling the little library’s collection and nearly filling it to capacity.

The University of West Georgia’s Dr. J. Salvador Peralta, assistant professor of political science, recently received a National Endowment for Humanities “Enduring Questions” grant for over $21,000. UWG was only one of three universities in Georgia to receive an NEH grant this year. The university will use the funds to create a course that explores the enduring question: “what does it mean to be free?”

The University of West Georgia’s College of Arts and Humanities recently hosted a small business workshop on The Partnership Movement, an initiative designed to show businesses that partnering with the arts can build a competitive advantage. The free and public event was held Tuesday evening at the Burson Center with keynote speaker Emily Peck, director of Private Sector Initiatives for Americans for the Arts.

Top-seeded Delta State, #5 Valdosta State, #6 West Alabama and #7 West Georgia will duke it out at Cole Field in Carrollton, GA over the next two days to determine this year's GSC Champion and automatic bid recipient into the 2013 South Regional.

The University of West Georgia held its annual Memorial Service on Monday to pay tribute to UWG students, faculty, staff and retirees who passed away in the 2012-2013 academic year. The service was held in the Victory Garden of the UWG Alumni House, where commemorative bricks where installed in the walkway in memory of the deceased individuals.

UWG alumna Dr. Laurie Barron ‘99, was recently recognized in the White House Rose Garden ceremony by President Barack Obama for being named the National Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife National Middle School Principal of the Year. Barron, who serves as principal of Smokey Road Middle School in Coweta County School System, was also privileged to meet one-on-one with the president in the Oval Office in addition to attending various inaugural events.

The University of West Georgia hosted its 2013 spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, April 27, at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the UWG Coliseum. Retiring President Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna gave his final keynote address as university president for both ceremonies to over 1,000 graduates, the largest recorded ceremony in UWG history.

Shelly Elman, UWG theatre professor, recently was honored with the Kennedy Center Medallion for her six years of work with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Elman has served as the Region IV Chair for the organization for the last three years, organizing the annual regional festival and providing 800-900 students each year with higher levels of opportunity.

Imagine spending over 38 hours solving nearly 10,000 multiplication problems. The fourth graders at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn, Ga., did just that over the course of four weeks in class earlier this year. The work was part of an experiment performed by Dr. Michael Orsega, University of West Georgia Computer Science professor.

The National Broadcasting Society named the University of West Georgia chapter of the NBS the “Most Improved Chapter of the Year” at the 71st Annual National Convention in Washington, D.C. UWG Professor of Mass Communications Dr. Bradford Yates was also awarded “Advisor of the Year” at the convention, which draws representatives from colleges and universities nationwide.

The University of West Georgia announces the establishment of the Susan and Alex Roush Speech Language Endowment Fund, created by Alex and Susan Roush in 2012. The $25,000 endowment will benefit UWG students majoring in speech-language pathology and aid in supporting UWG’s Speech and Hearing Clinic.
