eCore Classes Offer Free Electronic Textbooks for Select Courses (10/31/2013)

The University of West Georgia’s eCore now has free electronic textbooks for six of its online classes. The open textbooks are available publicly and for free as electronic publications that can be downloaded and printed.

University of West Georgia Partners with Two Universities In China (10/30/2013)

The University of West Georgia has two new partners in China, a development that gives the university the ability to expand international operations in several new academic areas. On a two-week visit that started in the Three Gorges region in central China and finished in the northern lake area of Hebei province, UWG representatives met with faculty, administrators and students to forge institutional relationships and establish the basis for academic cooperation.

UWG Receives Grant from Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (10/29/2013)

For the 10th consecutive year, the University of West Georgia Health Services Department received a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The overall goal of this $11,570 grant is to empower students to choose healthy, responsible lifestyles while creating safer, healthy campus environments and traditions.

Safe Treat and Carve on the Quad Offers Fun for Community (10/25/2013)

The University of West Georgia has plenty of treats in store for this year’s Safe Treat, a community trick-or-treating event on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at UWG’s academic quad east commons courtyard. The annual festivity, hosted by UWG’s Housing and Residence Life, welcomes all children ages 2 to 12 to the campus for games, candy and surprises.

Secretary of Smithsonian Institution to Speak at University of West Georgia (10/24/2013)

The University of West Georgia College of Arts and Humanities is serving as the statewide host site for discussion on a national report titled “The Heart of the Matter: the Humanities and Social Sciences” conducted by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences.

UWG Hosts Annual Regional Economic Forecast Breakfast (10/24/2013)

The University of West Georgia’s 2013 Economic Forecast Breakfast, presented by the Richards College of Business, Department of Economics and Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. Three economic experts will discuss the economic forecast for 2014 on local, state and national levels.

College of Science and Mathematics Receives Over $1 Million in Grants (10/17/2013)

The College of Science and Mathematics at the University of West Georgia received over $1 million in grant awards from the Georgia Space Grant Consortium-NASA, the National Science Foundation and the Math and Science Partnership of the Georgia Department of Education, all during September.

College of Social Sciences Prepared to Give Back at First College Service Day (10/15/2013)

The University of West Georgia College of Social Sciences partnered with the Community Foundation of West Georgia will hold its first ever all-college day of service on Friday, Oct. 18, from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. The event, themed “Event for Impact: COSS Day of Serving Humanity and Doing Public Good,” is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to express their commitment to the community by volunteering services to local nonprofit organizations and service projects.

University of West Georgia Alumnus Returns West to Talk Anthropology, Art and Business (10/10/2013)

The University of West Georgia Department of Anthropology will host UWG alumnus, E. Michael Whittington, on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 for a presentation titled “From Carrollton to Cowboy Country: Combining Anthropology, Art and Business to Lead a 21st Century Museum.” The event will be held in Kathy Cashen Hall in the Humanities building from 2:00 to 3:20 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Former Southern Company CIO and UWG Alum Inspires Women in Business (10/7/2013)

The University of West Georgia and Richards College of Business will be hosting Becky Blalock, author of the recently released DARE: Straight Talk on Confidence, Courage and Career for Women in Charge, for a book signing and speaking event on Oct. 24, 2013. Blalock, a UWG alumna, will return to campus for a full day of events including a speaking engagement that is free and open to the public at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. Blalock is available for interviews upon request.

Governor Deal Recognizes UWG’s Ferling for Achievements in the Arts and Humanities (10/3/2013)

Gov. Nathan Deal announced the recipients of the second annual Governor’s Awards for the Arts and Humanities on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013. UWG Professor Emeritus of History Dr. John Ferling was one of 15 recipients of the 2013 Governor’s Award. Both individuals and organizations were recognized for their significant contributions to Georgia’s civic and cultural vitality through service to the humanities or excellence in the art. The awards were presented in partnership with the Georgia Council for the Arts and the Georgia Humanities Council.

UWG Repairs Wolf Statue and Debuts Six New Wolves (10/2/2013)

The University of West Georgia will debut six new wolf statues as part of the second phase of the Howl for UWG project at the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 5. The statues will be on display at University Stadium, along with the recently repaired wolf statue, which was taken from its original location at The AMP at Adamson Square in August.

UWG Recognized Nationally for Comprehensive Mental Health Program (10/1/2013)

Today, the University of West Georgia announced it has been awarded the JedCampus Seal from The Jed Foundation, a leading organization working to promote emotional health and prevent suicide among college and university students. The Seal recognizes schools that exhibit comprehensive mental health promotion and suicide prevention programming on campus. The Seal is part of the Foundation’s JedCampus program, the first nationwide program to facilitate a school’s ability to assess and enhance their mental health support system from a campus-wide perspective.
