University of West Georgia Alumna Kathy Sheriff has been named the 2009 Georgia School Nurse of the Year by the Georgia Association of School Nurses.

The University of West Georgia recently announced the launch of the newly developed Disaster Mental Health website for Georgia, www.georgiadisaster.info.

The University of West Georgia will reopen on Monday, January 5. The university concluded its fall semester with a record enrollment of more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students and a commencement ceremony that saw 540 students walk across the stage.

Young children can sing to their favorite Christmas carols and grown ups will discover holiday magic when the Carroll Symphony Orchestra presents “Christmas with the CSO” on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

The UWG Debate Team finished fall semester with a national ranking of third at Wake Forest University in the fall semester’s last debate competition. With more than 150 teams in competition, Wake Forest's tournament is the largest held in the fall.

The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust and the Thomas B. Murphy Holocaust Teacher Training and Resource Center are sponsoring a statewide art and writing contest for Georgia middle and high school students.

Children young and old will thrill to the lights and sounds of the season. Bring a toy and enjoy hot chocolate and snacks from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Richard L. Dangle Theatre at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. The reception is free to the community and everyone is invited.

The University of West Georgia commencement ceremonies will be held in the Campus Center Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. Approximately 400 undergraduate and 140 graduate students will cross the stage to receive their diploma.

Recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai hit close to home with University of West Georgia President Beheruz N. Sethna and his family. Born in India and former residents of Mumbai, the Sethna family knew many of the victims of the bombings and attacks.

The University of West Georgia will host “Broken Glass,” a senior student exhibit by Michelle Lawrence from Monday, Dec. 8, through Friday, Dec. 12, in the second floor gallery of the Humanities Building.

The University of West Georgia will present the UWG Flute Ensemble concert on Monday, Dec. 1, at 8:15 p.m. in Kathy Cashen Recital Hall. The event is free and the community is invited to attend.
